I want to start using tarot cards and found some used ones online. Can I cleanse them and use them?
Yes, absolutely. These days it is far better to re-dedicate and re-use than it is to toss things in the bin. At least in my opinion anyway. Which deck did you find?
Your new cards? Lovely! Wish I had the second deck when I was learning meanings. I used my deck as flash cards with each card having the meaning on the reverse on a post it.
Yes, you can absolutely use second-hand tarot cards, and many experienced readers do! The key is to cleanse the cards energetically before you start working with them, so they’re attuned to your energy and intention rather than the previous owner’s.
Here are a few easy ways to cleanse them:
- Smoke cleansing with sage, palo santo, or incense
- Placing them under moonlight (especially during a full moon)
- Using sound, like a bell or singing bowl
- Shuffling with intention, while mentally clearing past energies
- Crystals, such as placing selenite or clear quartz on the deck overnight
Once cleansed, spend time connecting with the cards — shuffle, hold them, and maybe even sleep with them near your pillow for a few nights.
If you’re serious about learning the art and meaning behind tarot, I’d also suggest looking into a good tarot training program. A structured course can help you build confidence, understand deeper symbolism, and develop your intuition with clarity. The one offered by Age of Awakening is beginner-friendly, online, and very affordable — a great place to start!
Wishing you a magical and insightful tarot journey
Yes you can! I have many Tarot decks that I found in Used Book Stores in my area. There’s one right now that has about 15 used decks, but most of them are Oracle cards and not Tarot. If you are really attracted for a deck, then it is your deck. Some say it is better to be gifted a Tarot deck then to either buy it yourself or a preowned one. Some of my witch friends have hissed at me for getting them. I am a simple man, so I tell them do they ever go to a thrift store, they say yes and I then say, then do you smudge or cleanse every single item you get. They get silent. I have seens some Tarot card that are absolutely NOT for reading to me. Recently I just found a Motherpeace Tarot Deck at a used book store in Raleigh, North Carolina. I was extremely excited and the book with it. Motherpeace was the first Round Tarot Deck that was published. If I am not mistaken. Once I was in West Virginia and found a Necronomicon Deck. This was back in the 80s, so not the one you see in stores today. The cards seems to be made of leather and came with a leatherbound book wrote in red ink. I did not buy it. Later on, I found out it may have been the real deck, but that’s impossible. I have never seen it again and nowhere on the internet. I regret that action today, so I don’t NOT hesitate, if I see one I am attracted to. I smdge my new used deck in sage and I have been know to rub frankinsence oil on each card. One I got one that gave me a headache, I got a small cedar box, put herds and salt in it and the cards, shook the box a little and let them sit in there for a Moon cycle. No more headaces. Maybe it was psychological, because of what cards they were, Asteroth terot deck, and once again people hissed…this probably reason for the headache. Their negativity, than the cards. Oh yeah, has these people EVER gave me a deck? Nope, not ever. Asteroth Deck was 125 dollars in stores. I got it for 20 dollars at a used book store. Not turning that down…Praise the Goddess for the gift.
Thank you so much for the information!
