I am a self-taught intuitive who uses both tarot and oracle decks to inform my practice. I generally change decks with each new Moon (along with my altars) unless I feel guided to keep using the same deck.
This year, I’ve decided to do a deep dive into Tarot. I have 7 different decks. I have worked with one for decades - 30+ years - and I have some I barely have used! Since I am pausing on using the oracle decks, each New Moon I ask myself, my guides what deck to explore or what deck wants to work with me. Sometimes I get an obvious answer. Other times, not so much.
This lunation, 3 days before the New Moon, it became “obvious” that I was done working with the current deck. I did a final reading with it and thanked it for working with me and then as I went to put it away, I intutitvely felt called to use a new deck. I generally ask for confirmation and then pull a card to see if we are attuned.
Glad to see you in another post. I have 3 tarot decks that I currently use (I have 2 that I keep for the aesthetic purposes, I do not use them), and I have 2 different Lenormand sets. I keep all 5 within easy reach and just whichever one seems to call me at the moment.
Sometimes, I feel like I vibe so hard with a certain deck and other times, it feels a little disconnected. Maybe at the end of this year, I will have worked with all 7 of the decks enough to know if they are all meant to be used for my practice or just meant to be be pretty. lol I absultely love decks and could easily have more if I didnt control my urges!
I have an Earth Woman deck that I have not used yet. I’m still learning the RWS imagery, and not ready for the Earth Woman deck yet. I do have a United States of Tarot, Created by Elena Lee McCune (I found this on Amazon). I will probably NEVER use this one. This is just a collector/historical type deck. If you look it up, you’ll understand when you see the images.
Have FUN!!!
Please check in on my post Tarot Dailies March 2026 . I post questions for the week. Each day, I check-in, post my “answer” to the question and look at other people’s takes on their pulls. Please come join us!! Question for tomorrow is already up. Post early, tonight if you want.
I have dedicated decks for different types of readings. I have a single tarot deck for general readings that I vibe hard with as it’s an aquatic-themed deck. Then I have dedicated oracle decks for my guides and ancestors. I don’t reach for them very often though… (More on that later.)
I do mean to get a dedicated deity oracle at some point though (perhaps even two.) The thing is I find I get clearer readings with oracle decks, but the why is too hard to explain.
I normally use extrasensory methods to communicate with my guides, familiar, and deities. It’s both a gift and something I’ve trained myself to do over time. However, one of my new deities is a little hard to understand even with these methods, so I’m planning to get a dedicated oracle for him just to get past this initial “language barrier.” In this unusual scenario, I’m going to let him choose the deck.
Perhaps too wild an answer, that last one… but maybe the rest will give some insight.
I mainly use oracle cards bc the cultural backgrounds of tarot can be confusing to me I like the Prism Oracle because of its aesthetic and simplicity, and i made my own deck for personalized stuff
I am loving reading your responses and about your various decks. I just started working with a new deck - not new to me - but new to my dedicated practice. Decks are so relational! I used to sort of give up right away if I didn’t immediately connect with a deck but this time, I am putting time and work into allowing the relationship to develop. The fact that the Mythos deck was ready to be retired before the next New Moon was both relational and also a sign of my impatience. Once I noticed that, I slowed down and have been giving myself time to do shadow work, rest and release with this new deck. Today, the cards I pulled were so powerful and “on the nose” - I am truly grateful!. Thanks to all of you for being part of my new virtual tarot community!
Thanks! You just reminded me that I once had a dedicated Shadow Working deck - the infamous Wild Unknown Tarot by Kim Krans. That deck is incredible for that kind of use.
Also I forgot to mention the decks I use: The tarot deck is the Tempest Tarot. It’s the Angels & Ancestors Oracle by Kyle Gray for the spirits & ancestors… then there’s the Wolves Within oracle by Rio Burton for my familiar.
For my new deity I need to find a Buddhist or an Eastern-themed oracle. I’m hoping I can find one… If anyone is familiar with any, please let me know!
Nice! I’ve started studying certain Eastern styles of practice, and I agree - the differences are vast. Oracles are great, sometimes I like them more than tarot. There’s also other divination methods like dice throwing, rune-stones, etc…
(Ooh you’re into the deep stuff if you’re using that kind of book! Awesome.)
OMG I was just looking on Amazon and discovered that Tibetan Buddhists have their own divination system - using dice! Mo: The Tibetan Divination System
( I was just talking about dice - wasn’t I? Hmmm ……. curious. )
Of course… now it looks like there’s something else I need to learn. Cheers.
I recommend using just one deck—and always the same one—because the more you use it, the deeper and stronger the connection between you, the deck, and the Universe (the Tree of Life and the Sephiroth) becomes.
As for the deck itself, I would choose the Rider-Waite Tarot, which reflects the Sephiroth quite faithfully.
