How would I start?

I would like to say hi first and ask what would be a good starter spell to learn because I know almost nothing, I’ve got a wand, a grimorie (that’s blank) and nothing else so it would be nice if someone could give me some tips on a simple spell to cast.

Welcome to the forum.
I am glad to welcome you. Here one can learn many things if one reads. But never forget that you are free to act on the basis of this knowledge.
So what you will learn from me as the first word of the Magic of Perfect Action on the basis of the Knowledge that is incarnated by the Love of the Gods.
The word is Freedom!
I wish you health and success. Happy days!

Hello, Phoenix!
I don’t personally know many spells (I went the method of research meanings and practices and throw together what works for me) but for a beginning spell I’d recommend protection or grounding! Those tend to be the basics in Wicca from what I’ve learned.
@Lady-Gene, can you give your typical book recommendations? Phoenix, those should have some good spells.

Fantabulous Friday Phoenix,

Welcome to the pack :wolf: Honestly, you don’t need anything to start. But a wand is a great beginning, I agree with you, I love my wand!! I started with a blank book for my BOS but have actually done something else. I use a half size 3-ring binder, that way I can organize and change, add/subract, what I need for my BOS. I also use a full-size 3-ring binder for my notes and Tarot and Lenormand journaling. To each their own, what-ever works for you is correct!

Thank-you for the vote of confidence, Seeking. Here are the books, Phoenix–

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner–Scott Cunningham—this is very easy to read, very simple, and totally understandable. It gives a great basis for someone to decide what they want/believe before thinking about joining a coven. Who knows, maybe a coven is not for you.

Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft–Raymond Buckland–you may hear this referred to as “Buckland’s Big Blue”–this is easy, has short exercises, and gives easily understood explanations on the different “denominations” of Wicca.

A Witches’ Bible: The Complete Witches’ Handbook–Janet and Stewart Farrar–this follows Gardnerian Wicca very well; whether you agree with Gardner or not, this is a very “factual” book on what Wicca is. It is extremely informative, and many of us who do not follow the Gardnerian path, still keep this close at hand, because like the title says, it’s “A Witches’ Bible”—loads of information. As Sedim pointed out, there is much to see on this site.

Actually these are not “spell” books, but loads of information.

I suggest an affirmation spell to start.

Set yourself up in your preferred way…I know, you’re new, how do you know “your preferred way” I’ll just go into what I do for my morning supplications.

  • I go outside for my supplications. I get my book (notes and stuff), candle, incense, and water ready outside. Candle is for South, Fire; Incense is for East, Air; Water is for West and Water; and I just use the ground (I place my items on the ground) as my North, Earth.
  • I start with, “good night moon, hello sun, eve is over, day has begun”
  • Then I greet the elements with the hand signs, raise my arms at the elbows, palms facing outward, face E and give thanks for my East/Air god, for fire, the gesture is arms overhead and hands clasped, as if you were a candle flame
  • I turn West and cup my hands, and give thanks to my Western energies,
  • and returning to the North, Earth, again, arms bent at elbows, but unlike palms outward, facing the East/Air, my palms are facing downward, at the Earth
  • Finally, I raise my arms (think the drawing by Leonardo Da Vinci) upwards and give thanks to the Spirit/Essense/Cosmos.

Now I make my circle. I use very simple words to cast my circle…I cannot actually walk in a circle, so I swirl my arms over my ground altar, over the candle and incense, saying…Salt of the Earth, Stone of the Ground, Witness to the powers Found.

Now, the spell, I suggest simple affirmations to start, and this is my favorite.

  • I am Vital
  • I am Strong
  • I am Unique
  • I Belong.

With the Craft intention is everything. You don’t say this as hoping it; you say it with force and conviction…I AM VITAL…

To start this is all you need.

Close your circle…I love this one…Infuse and Instill the Strength of my Will.—I also like to use; As Above So Below, Let Blessings from this Circle Flow.

These are just suggestions. The beauty about the Craft is that it is adaptable to what you wish to do. Nothing is set in stone!!

Hope this gives you a jumping-off point.

Lady Gene :candle:

For you to start, I would suggest affirmations. Very simple, after your opener and circle to consecrate your space…start your spell.

also make a circle, but I knock with a cup full of seeds. In this way I clear the Space around me. The other is the Spiritual Beings who are with me. I offer my Homage to the Gods, to the Gods with Love.
The North is the beginning. I do this on my Home Altar. I counted the Altars until they were 9. Now there are more and all are alive through the Spiritual Beings.
I wish you health!

Welcome Phoenix,

I’m going to repeat the strategy Jasper describes. Research first, learn the tradition you want to follow first, and when you do get into spells, start with protection.

Of course you’re free to choose how to start, but as someone who’s seen plenty of magic go wrong - both from others IRL and those who come here for advice (I’ve been in the Occult for nearly 30 years and active on this forum for nearly 2) I really recommend going this route.

Though I will also recommend the books Lady Gene suggests for your research and yes, generally speaking, magick works through Intention and Will (how magick works is a complicated subject), so learning how to wield/enhance that in yourself is important.

Probably not as fun advice, but that’s mine. :lotus:

Welcome to the forum!

Candles are a great start, it’s how I started and I started those for meditation.

wow, such fantastic advice and guidance, this what makes this coven so vital both for the more informed and the less informed (ie me).
