Merry Meet Todd,
Not knowing how much you understand about the Art, I would encourage you to develop a solid sense of what you hope to achieve by following this path. Don’t be afraid to ask specific questions. There is much to learn, and it is important that you clearly understand not just how to do a certain thing, but why it is done a certain way and the vast array of possible results - some of which could be harmful to yourself or others. I think this is a very good place to learn. Bright Blessings!
Hi Todd,
Welcome! Witchcraft can be really overwhelming at first. And, everyone does it differently. Have you had an opportunity to read my guide to beginning witchcraft on the site? That’s a good starting place as will give you an overall look at everything as well as tips on where to begin.
If you’re interested in working with the Sabbats, I would start with the wheel of the year post. It links to each of the overviews for each holiday and from there you can go down the rabbit hole as I have posts on how to build an altar, rituals, recipes, and more for each.
New reply to an older post - don’t forget that your path can be very fluid and change as you learn more and discover what works for you. Do not be scared to change your path as you go - it isn’t set in cement.
Merry Meet Todd,
Just saw your post today. I prefer to do things on my own, so I suggest starting by learning the basics…I consider, Raymond Buckland’s Big Blue, Scott Cunningham’s Wicca: Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, and A Witches Bible by Janet and Stewart Farrar….The last one has much ritual and god/goddess fare…Buckland is basic, can be used with a coven of solitary, and Cunningham is for a solitary. I find all 3 to be a good basis to decide where to go from there. I have decided that I do not want a “branch” of Wicca, (Gardnerian, Dianic…) I am just a solar, solitary, elemental witch. Remember, the most important thing in magick is INTENT. You are learning how to use natural energy, as it flows, not necessarily how you want it to flow. Intent, Faith, Belief in Yourself are Tantamount to The Craft. There is no ONE way, there is YOUR way. You will know when you get there. It can’t be described, just “when you know, you’ll know”.
Happy Hunting for knowledge—Lady Gene

Merry Meet! First of all take 3 deep breaths and let them out slowly. You don’t have to know everything there is to know about the craft. Any of Scott Cunningham’s books are a good place to start. Also, **The Door to Witchcraft: A New Witch’s Guide to History, Traditions &…**by Tonya A. Brown is a great book to read before you try to actively create spells. The Witches Book of Spells: A Practical Guide to Spells and Rituals by R. Marten is another great book. I would suggest that you wait about casting any spells until after you have an idea of what it’s all about. Start small and be patient. It may take a little time for your spell to manifest or you may have to repeat. The more you practice the easier it will become. A witch is a witch is a witch! Modern witchcraft has been separated into different paths, green witch, kitchen, crystal, divination, eclectic, etc. As you learn and practice you may be called to one or more paths. If you have questions don’t be afraid to ask. The only stupid questions are the ones that never get asked. Have a wonderful magical journey as you begin your life as a witch!
lol as someone who’s new to their current practice, I can relate. I finally joined another community that’s a little more relevant to it and talked to some people there. Overwhelmed and stressed were definitely the words for what I felt. They were kind though, so at least there’s that.
As far as the craft goes, a lot of good advice here already if you’re still needing it! Hope things are going well for you now. ![]()
