Hi, I’m a baby witch just getting started with Hellenistic Paganism, I’m currently working with candles and sigils, I feel quite a connection with Apollo, but I’m not sure if he’s the right deity for me. Any advice?
Hello, if you are not sure about Apollo, you can connect to a more abstract Deity, like simply the God of Sun and Light, in which Apollo is one of them (this can even be related to the light of the candles, for instance). Or you can include an opposite Deity for moments when you need another type of connection, like Artemis or another Deity of Moon and Shadows.
Don’t get too caught up in the beginning with finding who’s just right for you in the way of patrons. I did it too in the start but over 31 years I remember a lot of dedication rituals to different deities and the truth is it most likely will change with time.
Everything changes as you go through different styles, different life changing events. The one thing I knew without a doubt when I started was that I was born to be a Witch and Psychic Medium. I knew how to do Magick without realizing I was doing it and without knowing anything beyond the stuff I saw on TV and snuck in from the bookstore on the subject. But, I was determined to strengthen, harness and control my gifts so I could use them responsibly. And I did.
Early on I started with Diana and Pan as many do thanks to Cunningham Wicca book. I was ok with Diana, sort of, but Pan never felt right. Over the years I worked with all the different pantheons and cultures, blending my own unique necessity in practice for the work at hand. I worked close with Apollo, Osiris, Dionysus.
Truth is I still don’t have a super close relationship to any specific Godform. I was always closer to the Goddess and she came to me early on. I found my Patroness, My guide, My Mother and My World in the arms of Hecate (modern practitioners spell it Hekate-I don’t care either way). Hecate’s guidance, teachings and resilient resources filled me with the first true invocation I performed early on. I never really understood until I answered her call and surrendered myself as her student, child and disciple.
For the better part of 30 years I actively have engaged with this remarkable source of sacred inspiration. Still, the closest I get to a God form is in Tannus/Lucifer as written in Aradia or Gospel of the witches. I’m heavy handed in my eclectic practice with Stregheria and often utilize representation of Aradia, Diana and Lucifer in ritual, but that’s me and my Italian roots.
My point, whatever you feel is right today for you is what is right. It may not always feel right and it may not always serve you as you evolve and find other deity or even blend deities in your view of the one you use. At the end of the day all God’s are one, all Goddesses one. They’re all fonts of human inspiration created in a blend of mankind’s reaching need for giving form and formation to religious and spiritual experiences interspersed with the energetic current present in the world around us which ebbs and flows and returns to its own systems, axioms and resources.
Point is, if all Divinity are resounding echoes of the same sacred source, you can’t go too wrong in working with a specific aspect. Follow your intuition and you’ll always be right where you need to be. You’ll always be utilizing the right tools in the right way for your situation in that moment. Things change, but your psychic mind will keep up with the passing time and keep you alert. Till then, if it feels right, and it works well in ritual or working, then you’re exercising your gifts for the Witch’s Way you’ve chosen to journey. Keep your head up and always show confidence in your chosen course of action. Trust me, that last bit of advice is huge! Confidence is always key.
