Beginner here wanting to learn all I can about protection for my children and home. Any help/advise is welcome. Book suggestions to help me learn more about the craft. Just started learning about the candle colors and their meanings. Plan on looking into herbs and their purposes, phases of the moon and their relations to the Moon Goddess, mother made, crone, and the elements and relations to direction north, south, east, and west. Any other things I should start looking into as a beginner?
Hi Megan,
Welcome! Here are some resources to get you started. It sounds like you’re primarily interested in witchcraft for protection? If you search the forum, you’ll find others have asked about protection spells and more that might interest you.
Witchcraft is about finding and tapping into your own power and using it (your Will) to shape your world, so there are lots of roads in.
This is my personal selection of books that I’ve found helpful on my journey, but everyone has their favorites: 5 of the Best Books for Beginner Witches | The Pagan Grimoire
I’ve been writing a post that goes over correspondences for the month and magic and journal prompts for each full moon. You can find those and all the articles we publish here: Blog | The Pagan Grimoire
Moon Goddess - do you mean Hecate?
Triple Goddess - the idea of a triple goddess has been around for thousands of years (Hecate is one of them) as a way of representing different aspects of the divine, but the connection of it to the Maiden, Mother, Crone model comes primarily from Robert Graves in the 19th and 20th century. That isn’t to say it doesn’t have value, but his work is a good place to look to understand more about it.

I haven’t done a ton on herbs yet. I naturally tend to cover things I work with the most (i.e. tarot and candle magic). If there’s one you’d like to see specifically, let me know and I can research and write it up for you.
One more thing you might find useful:
- North: Earth - pentacles / stones / rocks / salt / bones / dirt
- South: Fire - candles / cauldron / fire / wands (could also be for air)
- West: Water - water / chalice / seashells / driftwood / sea glass
- East: Air - athame / bells / broom / incense / wands (could also be fire)
Thank you so much for all the links and for the help. I’m still trying to figure it all out and I’m just going off what people tell me to research because I have no clue where to start. I’ve just always been drawn to it and would like to help protect my children and family from the bullies they are dealing with. I won’t be attempting anything for a long while now till I know more about it all.
