Happy winter solstice to you all. I am a new wiccan. I first became interested in witchcraft, when a work colleague of mine told me of how it changed her life for the better. I watched how it changed her and became fascinated by what I saw and heard. I purchased my first wiccan book in May 2025 and set my first wiccan alter not long after. I listen to many podcasts and read many books and social media entries. I’m still not sure how to refere to myself. Am I a witch, or a wiccan or a pagan? I’m from the Midlands in the UK.
Merry Meet Frank4508,
How you identify is up to you and many people have the same issue. From my perspective, if you honor nature and the natural order of life, and your worship involves plants, animals, or anything found in nature and is polytheistic or has deity other than a patriarchal monotheistic god figure, you are arguably by definition Pagan. If you practice witchcraft, you could identify as a witch. If you follow an established set of rules/guidelines for how to perform certain rituals, when and how sabbats must be observed, honor specific deity, and so on, based (for example) on Gardnerian Wicca, then you are Wiccan. The way I usually describe it is that a witch crafts and a Wiccan worships. All Wiccans may be witches, but not all witches are Wiccan. Bottom line? Most of us don’t really care one way or the other. Brightest Blessings!
Merry Meet Frank,
Real Quick…..So Right Marcus “most of us don’t really care one way or the other”. As for others in the craft, only they will understand the differences. So, I just say, “I am a witch”
, if they happen to respond, “Wiccan?” I just agree. No need to go into differences with them. As for US, in the craft, I still have not quite decided what I am. I cannot say that I am Wiccan, because I do not “believe” in any god/dess. I am a Witch. I consider myself a Solar, Eclectic Witch. Who knows…as we all evolve and grow, that may change. I would not be preoccupied with what to call yourself. Just continue learning, and you will figure it out.![]()
