Without giving too much away about myself, I’m a writer/director/producer in a major city working in theatre + film/TV. I am putting together a staged reading of a play I’ve been working on for a super long time as a benefit for a mutual aid org. Originally, I set out to do another show but it fell through due to a rights issue which in and of itself was SO heartbreaking and a story for another time…but because I had the theatre rented already, I decided to do another one in its place.
The only spells I’ve tried are protection spells. I’m very new at this, about a month in. I light a tea candle, put it over a rune symbol I’ve written with chalk on my dresser, light sage around my apartment and chanted “grant me peace, grant me protection.” I’ve done this and only this for a few weeks now. Sometimes I’ve written that statement three times down, three times across, three times up and folded the paper towards me and put it in jars filled with water overnight (I’m a water witch bc I’m a water sign and it just speaks to me). At the beginning of this practice, I read that you should tuck a lemon wedge under your tea candle, so I was doing that for a while.
For this staged reading I’m doing, there were 5 specific actors I was trying to get. Some of them have pretty large followings but none of them were particularly huge stars, and I’ve seen on socials they’ve done readings of other people’s work or smaller events around town. I wrote down things such as “X will join my cast of [insert show] on [insert date] at [insert place]” three times and across on paper, and folding it in towards me. Sometimes I would drip wax from an orange candle onto the paper as well before dunking them in water. When writing things down on paper I always try to be as specific as possible so that there’s no room for error. Before I dunk the paper in water, I’ll repeat what’s on the petition aloud, or sometimes I would say “insert name come to me”. I even took bay leaves, wrote down the name of each actor and their date of birth, burned the bay leaf and dunked it in jars.
I have one theory as to why it didn’t work which sounds too weird to be true but here goes: I’m in an extended sublet situation for about a year. I’ve never directly confronted my subletter but I know that she is somewhat witchy/spritual. She has all sorts of books around the house about spiritualiy, she even has an alter of shells and crystals right near my front door, and I found tea candles and specific spell candles: orange, red, and yellow as well. She has not given me permission to use them, I don’t think she even knows I’ve found them. Could this be the reason why my spells aren’t working?
Before you come at me for the last part, I’ve been struggling financially so badly. I really have almost no money to my name right now and things have been really hard. I’m severely underemployed. I really only want to use magic for good, I have no intention of casting spells against anyone - I promise. The most I would ever do is an attraction/love spell.
Anyway, I’m wondering if the reason this all blew up in my face recently is because I’m using things that don’t belong to me.
Here is my alter. Everything aside from the chalk, the crystal skull (a friend gifted this to me before I started my witchcraft journey), salt, lighters, Tarot cards, bay leaves and the circular shells are hers. I originally took it as a sign that I had all these objects at my disposal that I should’ve started witchcraft, but I think I’ve done wrong by taking without asking. The thing about my subletter is that she lives abroad and she is from outside the US and I’m pretty sure she only keeps this address in her name to keep US citizenship. I haven’t fucked with any of her other things besides these. The apartment came fully furnished.
Anyway, if my suspicions are true, how do I backtrack from this?
I’m so heartbroken that it looks like none of these actors are going to do my show. I’ve given them one last deadline to get back to me - and some of them legitimately seemed very interested at first - but now I’m being met with silence and it’s killing me.
