Medicinal Herbalism, Anyone?

Hello! Jasper here!

Before I found paganism, I was (and still am) an herbalist. Not the “this herb for that spell” type. The “these herbs when mixed in a tea should help with anxiety” type. I don’t know if anyone is interested in medicinal herbs, but I am, so I figured I might as well post about them!

Today’s herb: Lemongrass

This is my second favorite herb (Ashwagandha takes the top spot) and my favorite to put in a tea. It has (like the name says) a lemony scent and a grassy and lemony taste. There’s a reason it’s paired with green tea so much!
Lemongrass is one of my favorite herbs for anxiety and bad moods. Paired with ashwagandha, it’s great for stress. On it’s own, the scent alone cheers you up. Lemongrass helps with stress, anxiety, and hormones- the main reason I use it.
My sister has ADHD, and her favorite blend that I make for her is lemongrass, ashwagandha, and lavender.
Any questions, feel free to ask! I love talking about herbs!

Gods and spirits watch over you all,

Jasper :herb:

Thanks! I should start taking my Ashwagandha again, I paused it because of drug interaction

with SSRI’s (if I remember right) and now I’m on a new med. One thing that I take every night

is Valerian Root for relaxation & sleep at night. I should check if Ginseng is still a problem, too.

Nice!! Lemongrass is a lovely herb - I love it in Vietnamese and Thai cooking especially.

I’ve always loved herbal medicine. I was super into it when I was younger, before other interests eventually took center-stage. Ashwagandha as an adaptogenic is very good for stress. Never thought about it being a treatment for ADHD, that’s interesting.

An herb I’ve recently become interested in as a potential substitute for a medication I’m on is Holy Basil. Do you have any knowledge on that?

Cheers. :lotus:

Fabulous Friday Friends,

Jasper, thank-you for such a great thread!!! If anyone is interested, a friend gave me an herbal tea from an old Chinese book that is only 2 ingredients, and took the place of my son’s Psoriasis medication back around 2003, and he still uses it. No side-effects like chemical pills/creams. Chemicals in general, this is all natural. If anyone wishes it, just PM me, and no problem.

I would love to hear more Jasper, I love the natural remedies, but here in the desert, there is not much information or way to adequately experience it.

I love kitchen witchery and your teas fit that profile!

I’ve looked it up: Holy Basil Not much to go on, it don’t grow around here.

What I find is that drug interactions with prescription medicine is best researched by using AI.

I use Lumo AI, which is part of Proton, it’s absolutely private and secure. Now, you may have to

insist with the AI that it gives you the results and YOU will follow the leads. Some things like

medical advice are sometimes near an AI’s ‘guard rails’ and it will resist, but just say ‘gimme’.

Thanks for taking a look! I don’t know what it is about that herb, for some reason I’ve had a hard time finding a lot of information on it. I did finally find a brand that produces it in a liquid extract though. I think I’m going to try it that way first before I think of making my own…
Thanks Sedim. :white_heart:

Ahh I’m very interested in medicinal herbalism! It’s something I’ve been doing some intentional study on recently, hoping to learn as much as I can. It’s such an interesting topic!

I’m interested to hear you mention using ashwagandha, it’s an herb I’ve been hearing a lot about lately. Some of my research is focused on specifically herbs that help support ADHD and low mood, and it comes up pretty regularly as a recommendation. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it, especially where you source yours from and how you like to prepare it if that’s okay to ask!

Of course! I don’t have a climate where I can grow it, so I’ve just been getting mine from Amazon (sigh) not the best, I know, but I don’t know a nearby place where I can get it. I typically prepare it as a tea (it isn’t a tough root; you can just infuse it like tea leaves) along with either lemon grass or lemon balm (they have similar effects and tastes) and a sprinkle of lavender, as it’s very overpowering. If you want to use it for low mood instead of ADHD, swap out the lavender for something like rose petal or peppermint- the lavender is an addition for ADHD to help the body calm down.
Ashwagandha is one of my favorite overall herbs! I like to put it in 90% of my teas to help with stress and such. How much to use depends on if it’s a main ingredient or… whatever the equivalent of a garnish is for tea infusion.
What are your thoughts on it?
