I am new to this journey, learning is a daily enjoyment, I have read several members speaking of “their familiar”. How do I attract one? What do I need to do to enable this?

Wacky Wednesday Hombre,
I don’t think you can “attract” a familiar. I think it is more that they “find” you. I have a spirit/ghost that has been with me for decades, but he is not my “familiar” in the sense that he helps me. He’s just kind with me. So, sorry, I cannot be of help.

It is possible to reach out to a familiar, but the question is will they answer? They tend to only reveal themselves when they feel you’re at that point in your “journey.” I was taught that one gets assigned/chooses you either at birth or when you reach the age of reason (about 7-10 years old), or in-between depending on how hazardous your childhood was. 
Who’s to say, though? Loads of different teachings out there.

I had not heard of that “assignation”. That kind of makes sense. I rarely tell people, but from what I have been reading; I believe there will not be an issue here.
Back about 1971, I suddenly awoke and was drawn to the window. I looked out in the night (Vegas night, pretty bright back then, city was smaller, less domestic lights, mostly casino lights) and a mist came up from the ground, formed into a large face/skull/head about the size of a VW Beetle. That was it, I saw it for some time, then it just left, not fade, just gone. Never really thought about it, but that was right before my interest in witchcraft really took off. Maybe that was my “ghost” (I named him Steven) “attached” to me? Interesting idea. Thinking of this, it was after my grandfather, (my only grandparent that I knew) had passed, and I always felt that he or another guiding presence was with me. Maybe that is what it was all about that night. Thank-you so much, Wren!!! I hit you with another great thank-you on another post.

Ooh that’s interesting! That timing makes me think that may be the case. Family spirits aren’t really familiars, but they can also be very important guides, even protectors, for some people. The fact that that happened after his passing is very auspicious!
Try addressing him with your grandfather’s name - or if you have an item that may have been his while he was alive, try putting it out with a candle and his photo and see if he gets drawn to it! If it ends up being your grandfather that would be wild!

Merry Meet All
I have never sought out a familiar. They seem to come to me as I need them. As I child I was watched over by shapeshifter with piercing blue eyes every night for years. Since then, I have had different familiars, a deer, a raven, various animals. It may sound weird, but I have a tree that I consider a familiar.
What helps with most things magickal is the realization that we are working with a universe that is under no obligation to bend to our will. Don’t try to fill your vessel before it is properly prepared and always appreciate unexpected blessings.

Familiars are spirits that choose to assist you. Their support can strengthen your magickal practice, improve your day to day life, or both. And when a familiar commits to you, their help is often consistent and far reaching. If you seek instruction, a familiar can also teach you methods of magick and help you develop your psychic senses, especially in the early stages when your perception and communication are still developing.
A spirit is called a familiar because they are quite literally familiar to you. As in they’re regularly present, recognizable in their presence and patterns, and closely involved with your life. In practical terms, a familiar functions like a steady spiritual ally, something closer to a household attendant than a distant or occasional contact.
Historically, the word familiar traces back through older English usage to the Latin familiaris, meaning “of the household.” The term became especially prominent in early modern England, appearing frequently in witchcraft trial records and popular pamphlets. In those accounts, accused witches were often described as having “familiar spirits” that provided information, assisted with healing, or supported forms of folk divination such as fortune telling.
