I was doing some thinking today about altars, and I know the question about what other use for altars has cropped up many times.
I hope to be in the position to buy my own house this year, and when I do, I was wondering what and where to place my altar. I want one outside in a garden, but I also hope to have a smaller indoors one too.
As an altar can take up space, I thought, why not a floating shelf? A quick search and I found some ideas for floating shelves that would be awesome: a tree root design, although this is 3d printed, but did look cool. You can get mushroom shelves, pentagram shelves, all kind of things.
A floating shelf have be placed in a convenient spot, should one be free, and it wold have having to take it down all the time. *Although keeping it dust free and clean is a must*
And then my thoughts went to those that can’t be so open with their altars. Floating shelves with hidden compartments are also available for purchase. It would allow altar items to be hidden underneath when not in use and keep them close at hand. Just how much can be hidden in the shelf would depend on the size of the shelf, but it is something worth investigating.
One important thing to consider with a wall shelf is candle safety - obviously nothing too close to the wall or other items. I would consider a covered lantern or candle holder to keep things safe.

Merry Morning Red,
That is a very good idea, thank-you for letting us know.

I had a portable one for quite a while. It’s on a metal serving tray I got at a resale shop.
What I use is electronic LED candles. The large ones, use 3 AAA batteries preferably,
instead of coin battery, with rechargables. They’ve gotten rather good lately, even
have realistic ‘flicker’ by mechanical or electronic means. My familiar approves!

My altar is above my workstation where I can look at it every day. It’s on floating shelves. And I make sure to keep it clean and change it.

my altar in the house is next to my bed on the top of a dresser. my cloth is only an embroidered washcloth given to me as a gift, very simple altar….for my morning and evening oblations, I have a stump in the back yard that I place my element representations during circle. For my candles I have a little tea-light holder, the candle lasts about 4 hours, and I use a cone incense. Just keeping everything easy.

I do have a small, constant altar on a small shelf. I use it as reminder and decoration, not for prayer.
It has an electronic picture frame I got at goodwill that cycles a few things on. Instead of any statues.
I guess my portable altar is still from when I was in the broom closet, easy to hide.
No need now, but old habits die hard? Besides when my cat finally comes here
(he’s at my son’s house, still unpacking) it’ll keep it from being cat toys.

Fabulous Friday Sedim,
Like you, I also have an altar on the top of my dresser. I occasionally use it, but it more of a visual reminder for me. Everytime I walk into the room, I am reminded of my craft, and my focus for today. Outside I use the
tree stump for my altar with my daily oblations. (I keep a portable altar in my desk. It is an Altoids box, with all the elemental representations inside.)
