When someone that you know passes from this earth what and who do you offer a ritual to, I am new witch and I am unsure as to what is required of me? Any help or guidance would be so appreciated.
A few months ago this year, a good friend of mine had passed away from liver failure. The moment I found out, I preformed a ritual so I could speak to him. After speaking to him, I felt a sense of peace knowing he’s doing fine in the Christian heaven.
Sending you my wishes for comfort and solace. My best friend passed over in May and I’m still struggling with her loss, so am recently familiar with death.
When I practice my ritual honoring her, I don’t direct it toward any particular deity. Rather, I focus on her. I ask the universe to guide her spirit to peace. Sometimes I write my wishes on small slips of paper and burn them over a white candle, or perform a deep meditation using a black tourmaline crystal.
I’m of the opinion that honoring your friend’s memory and spirit is the most salient part of whatever ritual you choose to perform.
If you are Pagan or Wiccan you could give a prayer to the Psychopomp deity of your tradition (or theirs) for their safe passage.
If you feel inclined to do a full ritual, you could certainly perform one! It would be like a memorial service, except in ritual form. If you like the sound of that I could elaborate…
It’s really up to you - how close are you to this person? In my tradition we’d do a prayer for their safe passage like I described above, and for a good rebirth into this or one of the higher realms.
I practice necromancy and work with spirits of the dead. Nothing is required of you in this situation, and it’s actually best that you don’t do anything at all. There are very specific requirements and protocols involved in dealing with someone who has just passed on, and those are usually best handled by practitioners who are experienced in this kind of work.
If you still feel moved to do something, you can focus on sending out clear, heartfelt thoughts to wish for the person who has passed to receive support and safe passage to the other side. Those who do this type of work are often attuned to such thoughts, and they can help facilitate that transition for the one who is crossing over.
Good to see you here again Keldan. I was beginning to wonder if you left!
I practice necromancy
Necromancy is a funny word, but I’ve had a close relationship with the dead since I was very young. They have an attraction for natural Mediums and that relationship is what started me on my path.
It’s funny, in an earlier version of my reply I also wrote that nothing is required, but I edited it out because I understand the emotional needs of someone who’s in mourning. We are in agreement, as long as it’s focused on sending out prayer and positive support, I don’t see how a memorial service would have a negative effect on the passing of that person.
This is the problem. When someone dies, the funeral and its memorial service already serve as a moment of gathering and closure. The deceased is acknowledged, honored, and given the opportunity to witness their loved ones come together in one place and time.
However, after that point when the spirit is meant to move on, repeatedly holding additional memorial services will unintentionally reinforce the energetic connection between the living and the dead. When this is done without awareness, it hinders their transition to the other side.
I know you’ll ask about memorial services held a long time after a person has died, so I’ll address that in advance too.
Those later memorials are different. By that point, the individual has already crossed over to the other side. Holding a memorial service then is primarily for the living to honor their memory, express love and gratitude. You can schedule those gatherings whenever you feel it is appropriate, because they no longer interfere with the spirit’s passage.
When someone has just passed, it is important not to keep creating additional memorial events beyond the primary service organized by their loved ones.
