My Swamp (a poem)

Some people just don’t understand

They get confused 'cause I’m a man

But to the rumors they pay heed

They seek me out when they’re in need

Some seem to tremble wrapped in fear

As I come to the door when they draw near

But once they’ve been here they all see

No need to be afraid of me

Just natural ways to heal most ills

No need for all those doctors and pills

Gleaning cures from what Nature’s grown

If that bothers you, best leave me alone.

It’s mostly quiet here these days

As I practice Gram-ma Hattie’s ways

But I live back where the water’s deeper

And the price for trespassing is steeper

I love it here in the swamp you see

The gators and snakes, the dogs and me

For needy folks there is no fee

But think twice before you mess with me.

This black-water swamp keeps its secrets well

The gators eat and no secrets tell

If trouble’s your motive when here you roam

…Don’t plan on ever going home.

I fear most who to tell

When my emotions try to swell

For who shall I let keep

The secrets that make me cry and weep

These thoughts that seem to weigh me down

I can not share for i will drown

In judgment that seems to seep

Into the eyes of thee
