Help with misophonia

I need help with misophonia.

For those who are unaware, misophonia is a neurological condition that causes the brain to process certain sounds (typically referred to as trigger sounds) as threats, activating the fight-or-flight process. It can cause extreme anger, pain, fear, shame, and anxiety. It’s incredibly isolating, as to everyone else, these are just normal sounds. They do not understand that the sound of sniffling and throat clearing and gun chewing makes me want to throw up and run out of the room and (replacing the offending word with snuggle so I don’t get flagged by anti-violence because I’ve had that happen before) “snuggle” out someone’s sinuses or throat with a pencil no matter how close they are to me. And they don’t understand the guilt that comes with this, because “it’s just a normal sound, I should be able to handle it”. I have had full on panic attacks because of this before. I have taken to wearing full on 33 decibel foam earplugs to avoid these sounds- and my hearing is so sensitive that I can still hear people talking, it just puts a layer in between me and the sound that works maybe 70% of the time. If you’re going to recommend Loop earplugs, please don’t, everyone recommends those and those dinky little earplugs don’t do squat for me. I have tried and tried and tried and nothing works. My earplugs work most of the time but they just increase my hearing sensitivity. I go to school and so headphones don’t work unless my parents put in the huge amount of effort to get a 504, which they don’t want to do because they don’t think it will help me anyway. I also don’t have a therapist who can actually help with this. We’re currently going through the process to get me an official diagnosis to get me a good therapist and possibly school help, but seeing specialists takes forever, especially with all the referrals. Exposing myself will only cause panic attacks. Avoiding the sounds only makes it worse. My friends mostly understand but I still feel really guilty whenever I ask them to stop chewing gum or blow their nose, and it’s 10 times worse asking a stranger to stop. I feel trapped, stuck, and I don’t know what to do.

Any help is appreciated. Spiritual, medical, any. Deities to pray to or breathing exercises any help would be amazing. I feel stuck, trapped, and I don’t know what to do.

May the gods and spirits protect you all,

Jasper :herb:

I am a retired hypnotherapist and although I wouldn’t be able to help you now, I can still recommend hypnotherapy sessions. Nowadays it can be done both in person and on video call. Let us know if you decide to try it and how it went? Good luck

I have inner ear problems, I can’t fly, so I know this is a pain. Have you ever tried just regular

shop ear protectors? Like for use with power tools?

I use the most blocking earplugs that I can wear (33 decibel, supersoft) and find. I can’t use earmuffs or headphones (yet) because I don’t have the necessary paperwork (a 504) required to not get them taken away in school, and medium earplugs that I can use are better than headphones that would actually work better but get taken away and leave me with no protection (until I get the 504).

Well, that sux. I wonder if your school councilors can help you with a compromise with school

staff. Like, maybe you can wear them in the hall and lunchroom (loud places) and take them

off in class. Or when any teacher wishes to talk to you. Real shop ear protection are bright red

and not easy to mistake for music headphones.

That’s a heck of a superpower you have … and sounds very isolating. I’m sorry you have to live with that. Has this been an issue your entire life or do you think it was triggered by something?

I’m afraid I can’t think of anything that would help your hearing issue, but you could look into wearing calming stones such as howlite, white jade, and rose quartz. If you have a sensitivity to electronics and electrical fields (which emit a low-grade frequency that some with sensitive ears can hear), you may want to try wearing shungite and a grounding wrist strap. Both can also greatly reduce stress on the body in general too. :trident_emblem:

I don’t know what triggered it, but it hasn’t been my entire life. It started a few years ago when I kept getting mad at my little sister for eating too loudly (it took a bit before we figured out that I couldn’t stand the sound of smacking lips, and then it took longer to figure out that it was misophonia), and since then more and more sounds are getting added to the list. My mom thinks it was residual stress from moving for the first time, but no one actually knows what causes it, not even doctors. It’s not even in the DSM.
Thanks for the advice on crystals, I’ll see if I can get those, but I’m currently in the broom closet so that might take a bit or I might not be able to.

Interesting… well stress can certainly bring out the expression of genetic mutations (a process called epigenetics) which could be one potential reason for why “impossible or incurable” conditions come to the surface due to stress:

If this is the case for you, you could try increasing the amount of certain foods in your diet to increase DNA methylation - which down-regulates negative gene expression. A short-list of foods that are good for a methylation diet:

Side note: some of those foods are also very good for detoxing. Strange symptoms can occur if you’re heavy-metal toxic, or if you’ve had very high exposure to mold or environmental toxins. If you haven’t, I’d look into getting testing done for that. Even though they may not be the cause, they may still worsen your condition.

Of those tools I recommended, you’ll see that the earthing straps aren’t a witchy thing at all - so it’s an option your parents shouldn’t be bothered by.
A little on the science of the health benefits behind earthing:

As someone with an “incurable” condition myself, you have my confidence! I’ve been able to improve my situation and you have my faith that you’ll be able to improve yours too.

May you be well. :folded_hands:
