Re: Imbolc and Esbat Traditions

Hi everyone!

I’m currently compiling information on the specifics behind celebrating the Sabbats and Esbats for my grimoire. My plan is to ask about each Sabbat and Esbat during the month that they’re celebrated, so there will be eight posts total. Feel free to answer as much as you feel like sharing. In an effort to ensure that I’m not bombarded with various responses to sort out, I will ask you to please post responses relevant to the Sabbat and Esbat I’m asking about.

I celebrated Imbolc for the first time ever this year, and I’m still learning about what the holiday means and what I associate with it. For instance, something I associate with Imbolc that I had difficulty finding elsewhere in my research is bitter herbs like dandelion (which I found once) and nettle leaf. To me, these herbs are relevant because they both aid in detoxification (which can be considered purification, an important theme of Imbolc) and digestion, since this is a time for consuming dairy, which due to its fattiness can lead to an imbalance in the body.

How do you like to celebrate Imbolc? I would love to hear about how your rituals and beliefs - the deities you honor (if any), the foods and herbs you consume, the incense you burn, the flowers you decorate with, the colors you associate with Imbolc, etc. - contribute to your celebration. I’ve come across various items, symbols, and rituals in my research, which for me leads to some confusion as to what’s mainstream and what’s more personal practice (which are both valid in terms of celebration).

Also, I would love to hear about celebrating the Storm Moon Esbat of February. I don’t know much about the Esbats themselves - I’ve heard that they can be celebrated at the full moon and the new moon, so I am especially curious about any differences between these two celebrations.
